Thumbs down Same transmission?

I have a bet going with my buddy and if anyone knows the answer I would be much appreciated. We both have 2000 F250 superduty's, mine has a V10, his has the diesel. We were talking about towing and he insisted that the transmission in my truck was the same transmision for the smaller gas motor and therefore wouldn't be a good truck to tow with. I was told that the V10 was a option for poeple who needed more power for towing, and it came with a beefier transmission to handle the task. We both agree the diesel is better at towing, but disagree on the transmissions offered. I say there are three different trany's for the three different motors. He says there is only two trany's one for diesel and one for gas, who is Right on this?

It's a bit confusing.

From '99 to 2003 there was only the 4R100 auto for all three engines. There are some internal differences for each engine, which do relate to strength. The diesel is the strongest, the V10 next, and the V8 a bit less than the V10.

In 2003 the diesel got the TorqShift, while the gas engines stayed with the 4R100. In 2005 the 4R100 was no more and the gas engines also use the TorqShift. In this case the V10 and diesel trans are exactly the same, while the V8 has a few less clutch plates.

The lighter duty 4R70W was never used in the Superduty.

you both have 4r100 transmissions however they are not interchangeable (different bolt pattern on the bell housing). if anything the diesel transmission would be more "beefed up" because it produces quite a bit more tourque than the V10.

Here are the hp and torque stats on both V10 and 7.3L PSD for 2000 model year.

6.8L 310 hp V10
Horsepower: 310 @ 4250 RPM
Torque (lb-ft): 425 @ 3250 RPM

7.3L 235 hp V8
Horsepower: 235 @ 2700 RPM
Torque (lb-ft): 500 @ 1800 RPM

As already mentioned, they both have the 4R100 tranny, but the diesel does have the beefer internals for the added torque. That is why most re-built 4R100 trannies will get the beefer internals if paid for. The diesel tranny does have 1 more clutch pack than the gas version of the 4R100.

Hey thanks for the come back guys. I told him the V10 was beefed up more than the smaller V8 gas motor. But I guess we are both right if the model of the transmistion is the same. That stinks becuase I could taste the cold beers of victory, I guess we will have to split them now!

actually, i think the transmissions in the 5.4 V8 and 6.8 V10 (2000) are identical. i could be wrong but i do not remember every hearing that there are any differences in the two.

That is what my buddy said, but when I installed the shift kit on my transmition it was specific to the V10, which leads me to believe that there is a difference between the two. And if I'm not mistaken the V10 has bigger towing capacity than the smaller V8 gas motor, in which case I would think Ford would upgrade the trany to handle the load.

Nope...the reason your shift kit is specific to the V10 (probably anyway)...is because the 5.4L and V10 do have the same tranny. The shift kit is trying to improve the V10/tranny combo.

Yes, the V10 does have more towing capacity, but that is due to the engine and not the tranny. The transmissions are identical between the 5.4L and V10 in 2000. That is why the tranny is considered by many V10 owners to be the "weak" link in the setup.
