2 coolant temp sensors?

Hi all. I have an 85 fullsize bronco with a 4.9l engine. I'm in the process of restoring it to original. At this point the computer is not hooked up to anything. I was told that there are 2 coolant sensors, one for the guage and one for the computer. With out the computer hooked up, my temp guage does work. The temp sensor on the thermostat housing, is this for the guage or the computer?
Or maybe a simpler way of asking this is where is the sensor for the guage and where is the sensor for the computer?
Thanks. Bill

I know on the 5.0 the one for the ECU is closer to the t-star housing, and the one for the gauge is a bit further back on the intake and has only one wire going to it. Thats how you can tall the one for the ECU will have more than one wire running to it and the one for the gauge will have only one.

On later EFI trucks, the one in the thermostat housing is for the computer, and the one for the gauge is under the #6 exhaust port on the passenger side of the block. I don't know what role the computer serves in a feedback carb setup, though. I don't know if it looks at the coolant temp or not.

Ok, thanks guys. My engine is carbureted. From what you told me, the sensor on the thermostat housing is for the computer because it has 2 wires.
On the passenger side of the block rear of the block about half way up there is a single wire electricle plug. Could this be for the guage? I didn't really look at it, just remember seeing it. It should be a sensor that screws into the block, correct?
I have to take a closer look at it.
Thanks. Bill

The two-wire sensor is the computer sensor. The computer MUST have a signal send AND return to properly read the sensor. This is true of ALL of the ECA-monitored sensors. Temp sensors and everything else.
