A C6 doesn't have a locking torque converter, so there will slippage in third gear, changing the effective ratio. I've heard 10% given as a guideline, but I'm sure it depends on the tranny and what kind of shape it's in.

Very true, so it's probably even higher, like 2700-3000 rpm. That 300 is pretty wound up at that point. I don't ever remember taking mine over 3k w/o cringing.

AOD would be nice, that would drop the final drive on the tranny to .67, which would drop the rpm greatly.

There's a bunch of RPM calculators on the net like this one http://www.csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.html

235/75/15's are about 28-29" tall depending on wear and inflation. You can run your numbers through that calculator and it should be close.

What is the 2.47's out of? The pickup is a 31 spline axle where most car pumpkins were 28 spline. You cannot use one in place of the other unless you get matching axles (and the car pattern is smaller...so you are screwed!).

3.25's are a great run around gear ratio....what tires are you turning? I would not drop below a 3.0 for I think you mileage will suffer. Higher numerical gears is not the only answer! You could try taller tires, changing your driving habits, etc. If you drive it hard the mileage will stink no matter what you run in the rear end.

Would 2.47 gears work out a 9" Mustang

The gears will work, but you cannot swap third members. The axle spline count is probably different. Most cars had 28 splines, most trucks had 31 splines.

No dumb questions, only ones you don't know the answers to.

A 9" axle has a removeable third member. If you unbolt the center section from the axle housing and remove the axles and driveshaft, the third member will come out. This unit contains the ring & pinion, side gears, and spider gears, all set up already. It makes it really easy to relatively quickly and cheaply change gear ratios without having to go through setting up gears, which is a meticulous and very precise process, and probably not to be attempted by a home mechanic. I would not do it myself.

The pumpkin/center section/carrier is also known as the 3rd member. It is worth noting that you cannot add a 31 spline pinion/mini spool to a 28 spline carrier. The axle diameter is different and will not fit though the hole.

Yes...I tried it.
