My friend and I were having a discussion about our 4.6L F150's. I thought I read that our engines use the Coil Over Plug system. He thinks thats only on the 5.4
Could someone please explain what exactly the COP system is, how it works, and what engines have them?
For the F-series, including Expy & NAvi, the 4.6 started getting the COPs in MY 2000. In 99 and prior, the 4.6 had plug wires. The 5.4 has always had only COPs. Ford has used COPs in earlier models including the 3.4L SHO and earlier 4.6 L in the CV. Probably more, I haven't checked.
The COP system works much like the traditional coil and wire, except there is a separate coil that is physically mounted directly on the plug (no plug wire)and is fired by the PCM.
If you go to the top of the page under the Recalls/TSBs, find the full-text TSB on diagnosing COP faults. It can offer some useful insights into the system.
