98 Ford Explorer

4.0 SOHC 80,000 miles. Would not start, had the battery checked, replaced battery with a new one. It started right up, but the battery light was on in the instrument cluster and the volt gauge was showing low. I took the negative battery cable off and it died. I thought it was the alternator, so I took it off and went and had it checked. It was putting out 13.5-14 volts. All of the fuses under the hood and in the cab are good. The 30 amp radio fuse was blown so I replaced that.

What am I missing here? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Double check the "generator/voltage regulator" fuse.

On a 97 it's mini fuse 6 in the power distribution box.

But look at the fuse list in your owners manual to see if your 98 is the same.

If this fuse is blown it wont charge.

I had the same problem, it was the small wire plug on the alternator, cleaned it up and still had the same thing, cleaned it VARY good and solved the problem
