Hunting Blues

So deer season is about to start here in my part of CA (rifle) and to be honest I just don't feel like going much any more and I'm kind depressed because I've gotten another several thousand acres to hunt and I should feel blessed and that fact that my kids (11 and 8) want to go but I just don't feel like it... anyone else evr get that way?

Its not because I haven't had good luck, quite the opposite, this year we killed over 40 hogs on one ranch, lots of dove and I've gotten a decent buck every year for the last for years since I started deer hunting; and that was all in the opening week; all 3pts to 5pts (on each side for you white tail people) 19" and up.

So what; am I getting soft?...I just hate to let the kids down.

nah not soft. just burnt out. some times ya just got to take a year off to relax, collect your thoughts, and get back into the swing of things.

yesterday was opening day for fall bow here in jersey. i could not go, due to a little accident i had on friday that has caused a lack of motivation(busted foot).
but my nephew went to our spot by himself, and at 7:05 am, on his first day of hunting, bagged a 6 pointer.
the first thing he did was bring it here to show me. darn!! wish i was there in the woods with him to share that moment.

bcolone, I would be in huntin heaven if i were in your boots, You say that you have several thousand acres to hunt ( WOW ) and that you have two young kids that WHAT to go hunting with you . Myself i enjoy taking young hunters with me hunting,
Sound like you have the perfect opportunity to share the great outdoors with your kids and teach them how to hunt, and think about all the time you get to spend with them in the woods. You need to JUST DO IT.

Lots of luck and like Fred Bear always said - HAPPY HUNTING.

I say take the trip, but don't bag anything for yourself. Turn your primary focus from hunting to teaching. If one of the kids should happen to bag something, happy day for him/her.

FWIW: Yesterday I spent the morning on the mommobile, got bitched at for that (= bad attitude). Then she wanted me to take them to some event she heard about, get out and find NOTHING=worse attitude. Rather than go home and get bitched at even more, I drove up one of the nearby canyons, parked at an open space and we walked a trail for maybe a mile. Don't tell anyone, but...I HAD FUN!!! It's pretty amazing what can happen if you give it a chance.

I get burned out at times. My burnout is caused by the outragous lease prices around here. They have tripled in the last few yrs.

I hope you get your drive back. Take the kids with you and take a camera as well. You can shoot wildlife with a camera and get some great pics of the kids. They will remember the hunting experience for their entire lives, even if you don't fill your tag.

My buddy and I took our 6-year old sons with us for opening weekend in Southern A-zone. The boys had a great time and my buddy finally got his first buck after 5 seasons! Our sons loved it and were excited to see the does, squirels, rabbits and birds. My son even snuck up on a spike buck, got within about 40' before he spooked it. I've got a great pic of that and he loves it!

Same situation.
Over 2,000 acres to hunt (total) in Maryland, plus I'm part owner in some land in Virginia.
A worn out body and work related stress keeps me from going hunting, any longer. (Add 'no time' to go, also!)

Stress is a BIG part of the equation.

Time for the kids and teaching can spark new interest in the sport.

Same here. I wait all year for deer season to open here in NY. Bow opens Oct 15th and then rifle in Nov and back to bow and black powder in Dec and Jan. I have the whole rest of the year to relax. We only have 4 months of big game and I make sure I'm out there at least a weekend or two a month.

Funny thing is my friend and I went up yesterday to look around and he's feeling the same way; problem is our kids are all excited to go ( they aren't old enough to hunt yet, but they do shoot) anyways we were talking and we will take them maybe just not opening weekend; I think its being tired, no time, and we've had such great luck we got spoiled; however we were excited to see A LOT of quail up there!

yeah...I just had some guy berate me for not wanting to go, and I guess that's true I used to have to hunt all this public land and now I have tons of private land but I had to work extremely hard to convince people to let me hunt on their land for no money; although i do work cattle and do other stuff for them when they need an extra had for free.

You want to talk about challenge. I just got back from a archery elk hunt on public land(the Uinta mtns) here in utah. I spent a week and a half hicking my a$$ off and only heard from one bull. The temperature was right for the rut but I guess the 50 million people sight seeing on four wheelers may have had something to do with it. Time to eat the money and go out of state. Who ever said Utah was a great elk state anyway. I see Colorado in my future.

My input, you might end up regretting not going this year.
