Expedition Steering Question

My 1997 Expedition EB 4x4 has a "creaking" noise coming from the steering column. I don't normally drive this truck, but my wife informed me she started hearing the noise about a week back. She said it seems as if sometimes the steering binds up. I drove the truck tonight and the noise is worsening and the steering feels much tighter (harder to turn) than normal. Does anyone have a clue as to what this might be or even where to start looking? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I would be concerned that the steering gear is starting to bind due to internal wear.

Another good possibility is a steering shaft u-joint or bearing/bushing is binding.

If the noise is coming directly from the column (inside the cab), I start looking at it first.

Thanks for the reply! I did have a chance to look at it a little more yesterday. I did everything but remove the steering wheel (I don't have a puller), the problem is in the steering column after the joint for the tilt wheel. I have about 1/4" of play it's like whatever supports the steering shaft is worn out or broke and it's causing everything to rub. I'm going to try to borrow a friend puller to get the wheel off sometime this week, but does anyone have any idea of what kind of bushing I'll be looking for? Thanks again!
