After reading your threads I had my mind made on the Diablo, then I called a truck supply shop and they told me that they had been experiencing numerous problems wiht the Diablo. Thay recommended the Superchip. They both have numerous settings, can read and clear codes, and most importantly they produce power.
What is your experience? Which is the right choice?
I've had nearly a year of trouble free operation with my Diablo.
I'm not real thrilled with the way the throttle responds at the higher HP settings, very twitchy and a TON of smoke until the turbo spools up. I have a stick shift and that is a common complaint with not only the Diablo but with other tuners as well for manual transmission trucks. They work better with automatics.
So I pretty much only use the Tow/Haul tune and that's plenty of power for me to get around with my 10,000 lb truck. And it pulls the 5th wheel strongly enough to hardly ever have to shift down except when pulling a 5% grade or steeper. Then I only have to shift down once.
If I were in the market for tuner I would get one of the tuners that Jody Tipton is offering right now. He loads them with his tunes, not the ones that normally come with it.
Is he loading them into a Diablo? Or is he using his own brand? Where can I learn more?
I am thinking of doing your Kwik 6637 and cutting the muffler out of the line up. I will add gauges first, then replace the exhaust when the bank account allows it. Will any of the three tuners work wiht these set up?
I think your driving style is much like mine. I tow often at work and want some giddy up for the rest of the time.
I agree with Kwik, when I had my Diablo my truck seemed to be right at home with the 60 tow setting. Even empty the 60 tow seemed to have better driveability(is that a word?) Anyway, I'm using a DP-Tuner now and everything is right with the world.
Does the DP tuner plug into the dash like the superchip and Diablo? I like the feature that pulls and erases codes. Does the DP offer the same feature?
It is a chip you have to put in your pcm once and forget about it after that. It is a chip and can change settings on the fly. Tuners you plug in have to go through about a five minute process of turning on and of the ignition several times. The first time you do it it takes about ten minutes because it has to back up your stock setting. The chip is THE WAY to go unless you absolutely need a scan tool.
You can mount a twist **** on the dash. Go to dp-tuner.com and check his new electronic switch. Just push a button and your done. The tuners are decent but his programs are above and beyond and you don't have to cycle your ignition on and off (about 15 or so times) every time you want to change the program.
I just read about the switch. You are right the DP is the way to go. I like the switch idea over the plug and play programmers. Thanks for the info. I emailed the sales team at DP and detailed my situation. I look forward to hearing his recommendations.
Thanks guys for the info. With gauges, the kwik 6637, and removal of the muffler, should I regain the lost acceleration from my 3.73's and 35" tires? I am looking for stronger towing capabilities at highway speeds and faster accereraltion with and without a load. Am I barking up the right tree?
Sounds like your on the right track. You might want to look into a complete exhaust, MBRP sells a great 4 inch turbo back, that will really clear the sinuses of your truck.
I don't think those mods will make up for the 35's. The chip will make up for 44's and then some. You will be amazed. I would also suggest a 4" exhaust system to keep temps down. You will want a pyrometer gauge with the probe pre-turbo, transmission gauge, and a boost gauge.
