hey, I got a 1965 "F-260" 4x4. I am about ready to get it painted and I had my uncle come over and look at it because he owns a body shop. He said that he thinks that it used to have a shortbed on it but that a previous owner put a long bed on it. This is because the front part of the rear fender on both sides are cut out. So the "natural" body line of the fender doesn't go around the tire because it was cut out. Is there anyway that i could tell if it is an original shortbed so i could maybe get one? Thanks!!!!

This one gets involved, so read on. For 1965, the regular long box truck wheelbase was lengthened 1 inch to 129" HOWEVER, the 4x4 rode on a 120" wb (Ford Pickups-McLaughlin). On your truck, it sounds like someone replaced the old style stock box with a newer version, maybe because it was damaged or rusted and they didn't realize or didn't care they did not match. For your truck to actually be changed to a longer wb, there should be some frame modifications that were done. The 1966 4x4 model frames were different, and could be had with the "new style" regular wide box or stepside in long or short wb...

Sorry, I must have accidentally read the wb. for the f-250 4x2. (I feel like an idiot) My books do confirm the F-250 4x4 as having a 120" wb. It was the 120" wb. that was the reason that the '57-'60 box was used (This I'm sure of). Please accept my sincere apologies.

Hi, That is correct. On the 2WD's, Ford lengthened the wheel base in 1965 on their F-100 Short wheelbase trucks by 1" (from 114" to 115"). They also lengthened the long box version of the F-100 and F-250 by 1" (from 128" to 129"). The 4x4's remained on a special 120" wheelbase (for both F-100 and F-250).

To the best of my knowledge the '64-'66 2WD beds were the same, with the exception of the optional "lockable tool compartment" which I believe wasn't available until '65. The 1" difference in wheelbase really dosen't stand out much in that big tire well.

Hi Jerry, The portion you quoted me on I was refering only to the 1965's. The 1966 F-100 4x4's are a special case (beautiful truck you have BTW!). The '66 F-100 4x4 styleside was available in 2 different wheelbases. The type of bed ('66 like yours, or '57-60) depended on which wheelbase was ordered. This does not apply to the '66 F-250 4X4 however, which was still only available with a '57-'60 box. Hope this clarifies a bit.
