Lower EGT, need ideas...

What are some of the best ways to lower your EGT's? I have an '02 and pull a 28' Desert Fox hauler.

Thanks,
Rob

There are plenty of aftermarket intercoolers out there. You can install a 6.0 intercooler for around 200 bucks if you are thrifty. I'm researching the 6.0 now and have read that other users are reporting 75*-100* drops in egt. Not too bad for $200. You can also go water/meth setup and cool down up to 150*-200* and add power at the same time.Do a search on Water/meth or snow performance

free flowing intake, 4 or 5 inch exhaust, CCV mod, AIH delete mod, 1.15 AR turbo compressor housing, larger intercooler, larger turbo, water meth injection....

I have an 02 and was told to stay away from the water/meth. Our engines have the powdered metal rods and don't stand the higher cylinder pressures as well as the forged rods.

My biggest drop in EGT's came when I added a BB turbo.

Where's your probe? If you have it pre turbo, I think the general consensus is 1250 for redline. I'm not sure about post turbo.

I guess the problem I'm trying to alleviate is this... When towing up steep grades like mountain passes my EGT's are limiting the amount of throttle I can give. So therefore, I can only maintain about 45 to 50 mph up steep grades. Is this normal? Will an upgraded turbo and/or intercooler give me the ability to give more throttle and therefore maintain a higher speed up hills?

-Higher flow intake and air filter, AFE perhaps.
-Intercooler upgrade
-4 inch down pipe and free flowing exhaust
-1.0 or 1.15 turbo exhaust housing or turbo upgrade
-Water/meth kit, but run 100% WATER
-Check for boost leaks

Hope this helps.

As stated by wlihntr, free flowing, larger exhaust and larger intake like the 6637 will do as much as anything. If you still need more the go with the larger intercooler and turbo. If you have a cat. and muffler, loosing them will do a lot for lowering the EGT's.

According to one of our well respected members, jtharvey, 200 to 300 degrees lower when reading post turbo than when reading pre turbo. I would say you need to try to stay at or below 1000 degrees post turbo.

EDIT: Read this https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...ost-turbo.html

rtalich,

What mods have you done? Chip, exhaust etc. If chipped, what setting are you running? Do you have oversize tires?

Depending on how heavy you are and how steep/long the grade is, even with all the mods mentioned above, you may have to back out of it due to EGT's.

I had issues with EGT's when I was running a hand held tuner. I had 4" exhaust from turbo, high flow intake, wicked wheel, aih deleted and I still could not run on the 85 hp tune.

I switched to one of Jody's chips and that alone helped my EGT's considerably. I could run a hotter tune and stay in it longer. As I mentioned before, I got my biggest break in EGT's when I switched to a BB turbo. I rarely have to back out of it because of EGT's even when pulling a 37' 5th wheel.

But I also do most of my pulling in flat territory. I haven't pulled up any mountains and I'm sure things would change if I did. I'd probably have to back down on my hp setting.

I have a chip installed. Not sure what brand it is but gives me an extra 100 hp at the rear wheels. Did a before and after dyno. Other mods... AFE, 4" exhaust from the turbo, 35" tires with a leveling kit, tru-cool and ATS tranny coolers. One thing I didn't try was towing without the chip, which is what I'll do next time.

You could save some EGT's by going with another chip. With a 6 pos chip you could run a lower hp (40,60,80)tune and save EGT's, but still have more power than stock. With a flip chip, you can change on the fly, so if you're pulling a hill and it gets hot, you could back it off a notch or two. I highly recommend Jody Tipton if you get into the market for one.

Have you regeared? The 35" tires gives your truck a weaker gear which alone would drive up the EGT's. It takes more power to turn those meats, especially towing. I used to tow w/ my 34" MTR's and recently started towing w/ factory tires. It was amazing the difference in power. Before I could hardly get into overdrive unless I was on the interstate. With factory tires, I can get into O/D a lot more often now.

With the setup you have, I don't think it's out of the ordinary to have high EGT's in the scenario you're talking about.

A couple of cheap mods to help increase airflow.

Gut the Exhaust Backpressure Valve
AIH Delete
Zoodad Mod

Thanks for all your help!! From another post it looks as though replacing the intercooler will help the most. Changing the intercooler along with a tuner will probably make a huge improvement. I'm familiar with the EBPV mod but what is the AIH delete and Zoodad mod?
