I suspect that the heating/cooling cycles loosened some crud, probably in the block or radiator/heater cores. The back flush is a good plan. Pull the thermostat and check to see if it got blocked causing the new overheat problem.
With all the time it sat, I suspect you may have to do this a few times before all of it is dislodged and flushed.
I had similar issues with my hudson pickup, Ive never seen an engine run that well with the amount of crud that was in the water jacket of that thing.
You might want to try this stuff: www.safestrustremover.com
I was installing a new radiator so looped the water pump back into itself, filled up the block (coolant system only obviously) with the rust remover and ran it up to temperature, shut it down and repeated 3 times in a 24 hour period and drained it, the stuff goes in looking like pee and cam out black and filled with crud. The inside of the water jacket looked like new cast metal and I never had any more issues with it.
here is a pic of the after, sorry I didn't take any before, but just imagine an engine that was 55 years old and run with water in it for most of its life
i had a old ford with similar problem it sat for yaers and rusted up pretty good a old blacksmith radiator repair guy to ld me to drain the antifreeze out of it put in 1/2 gallon of amonia and let it run at idle for about an hour let it cool and pull all the drain plug and flush the system out mine was rusted pretty good it took a couple of treatments but it pulled most of the rust and scale out of the block. pulled the rad out and he rod and boiled it and put good anti freeze in it never had overheating again.
side not amonia work good on getting surface rust out of the inside of gas tanks.
I agree with Randy don't get in a big hurry. I had the same problem on a 1963 I once had. I got the reverse flush kit and repeated as neccessary and ran Reverse Osmosis water in the system. My thermostat never did get plugged up. Maybe it is just the crud plugging the radiator. Also with the reverse flush kit you might try just using water with no chemical additives and see what comes out. One it starts coming out clean then go back and try the additive to flush more out.

The PO had to flush my 302 3 times to get it to stop overheating. Then it sat for 3 years, and didnt run. Hopefully I don't get it overheating again. But I agree with Randy's first post.
ok guys back flushe cooling system till water was clear, did find my heater core plugged up with rust! so i disconected it for now -im just gonna replace it!
gonna see if she over heats tommorow!
