shift fork question....

got the tranny and bellhousing off the 66,found out that the shift fork is "loose" as in i can pull it through the boot. My dad said he thinks there should be a clip on the fork to hold it onto the throwout bearing......should there be??there is a clip on the throwout bearing itself but the shift fork can still be moved in and out....if anyone has any pictures of what the assembly should look like that would be great....but any help is more than appreciated...thanks

shift fork question....

First you are talking about the release lever for the clutch. It should have a spring clip that is rivited to the back side of the lever. This clip snaps behind the pivot ball to keep the lever located correctly. It has either slipped off the pivot ball or the clip has broken. If you take the lever out of the bellhousing and look at the back of it(toward the tranny) you will see the clip, it will look like the clips that they use to hold the ends of the Ebrake cable. If it's not broken put the lever back in the bellhousing, line up the clip past the pivot ball, then push down and pull the out it should snap into place and stay there. While you have it all apart check you clutch and replace it if need be. Good Luck, Rich
