New member intro
I joined this forum because I was searching a problem I was having with my '01 F-150. In order to see the entire article I had to join. Now that I am here this looks like a fun site and here is my story.
I am Ford fan and have owned many Fords. First vehicle I drove was my Dad's brown F-1something Explorer, three in a tree six cylinder. That was some decades ago.
As for trucks I bought a '95 F-150 XL 4x4 with the plow prep, 6 cyl, reg cab, 8' bed new. I saved and waited five years to finally get my truck and it was a glories day since I was driving a Chevy Citation before that. The Citation was a great car and has a story all to its own, but back to Fords. I loved that big 4.9L 6 cyl engine and auto tranny. No speed machine, but a real horse on the roads.
I had to sell it when my daughter was born becasue it didn't fit the two cars seats and my wife well. I drove my wife's '93 Explorer so she could get a new '98 Windstar which worked well with the kids. I hated the Windstar but my wife loved it until she realized what it really was at 50K miles, a junky minivan. She traded it on a used 2000 Expedition with the 4.6L AWD Sport package and still drives it today. Best vehicle she has ever had she tells me, but now wants a Freestyle. There is nothing wrong with the Expedition and is about to turn 100K. This SUV is awesome. A real tank with a suspension of a pillow floating in air. The 4.6L is under powered on the highway, but around town it rocks. My wife knows there is a front end, back end, which pedals to push to make it go and stop and that's about it for cars. No problem because the Expedition takes care of her, not the other way around.
I Missed my truck a lot. When the head gaskets blew on the Explorer I traded it for a used '01 F-150 XL 4x4 Reg cab 8' bed 7700 Payload Package with 5400 miles on it. Now this truck was nice. That 5.4L with the 3:73 gears in the back made me remember some of the vehicles I drove in the '70s. Ahh, my Mom's '73 LTD Country Squire wagon with the fake wood panels and 400ci 2 barrel engine. I made memories in that car.... Anyways, I loved this truck. At 45K I put the Michillen LTX M/S tires on it. These tires are the absolute best. I know there are other good tires out there, but when those Goodyear whatevers came off and the Michis went on, I had a whole new truck that drove and stopped like nothing it was before. These tires are not your ordinary tires, but the LT, Load range E, 10 ply tires. BTY - I put top of the line Michis on all my vehicles. There is no substitute for a quality set of Michis in my book.
OK, how did I get here - right. At almost 120K miles I started to get this clunk on the 2-1 downshift. This did not sound good. Yesterday I took it to my Ford dealership that told me what I read on this site, I need a new or rebuilt tranny. They recommended a refurbished 3 year/75 miles warrenty one for $3,500. I said hold that thought. For the past four months I have eyed an '06 F-150 XLT 4x4 Reg cab, 8' bed, heavy duty payload package, 5.4L and 4.10 limited slip diff on the lot. Everytime I go in for service I check to see if it was still there. Today, I am now driving this '06 F-150 and love it.
I do not even have 100 miles on it and thinking real hard on how to convince the wife I need new tires. The General Grabber TR tires on this truck leave me skeptical of there ride and durability. Doing some research here my suspesion that these tires are junk is correct. So far the truck is amazing. I forgot about the nice touches the XLT has over the XL, but it needs a set of Michillens...
