FE Block Balance questions

##### Benjamin
4 Ford trucks, and
Many other oldies also.

OH Man, is this forum ever a find for me! I have gotten so much conflicting advice that I am now thoroughly confused.

This discussion is about my 1966 F250 PU with a so-so body, and an original 352/automatic transmission, and my 1966 F250 PU with a great original body and an unknown source 428/factory 4 speed. I want to combine the 352 with the better body truck and the 4 speed transmission.

I am about done with a complete rebuild the 352 engine, which came out of my '66 F250 automatic transmission truck. I want to put this engine in my '66 F250 4 speed truck, which currently has a 428. I don't know the history of the 428, but it runs strong and has no vibration problems. However, the 428 is such a gas hog, and was built with a hot cam, that it is not my cuppa tea at all.

I understand that I cannot simply bolt the 352 in, as it will shake itself to pieces due to a difference in how the engines are balanced. Is this correct?

Assuming it is; then I have a
Question: Is there a flywheel I can find that will make my 352 work with my factory 4 speed? I have two flywheels from a junkyard, they are both labled "390", but they are different in diameter. One of them is the same diameter as the flex plate from the (previously automatic) 352, but I have been warned this will not be balanced properly for this engine.

Is this a harmonic balancer problem also?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to do this right, and keep the truck as original as possible.

Thank you all very much.

DB, What a problem to have, as the 428 is a highly sought after engine. You shouldn't have a problem finding a flywheel from a truck engine that would work. I say that because most of the PUs have either 352 or 360 engines and the flywheel from either will work. It was the 428 that had a different balance setup. Don't forget the pilot bushing on the crank shaft when converting to and from automatic use.

Thanks, John. That helps a lot. I appreciate the reminder about the pilot bushing too.

I was hoping that one or the other of the two 390 flywheels I have would do the job on the 352. I guess I'll have to just take a chance and see if that will work. So far, I have been unable to find a 352 flywheel from a standard transmission truck or car.

As for the 428, I'm planning to install it in the other (Automatic) truck and try to recover some of my costs from this restoration by finding someone who wants to go from 0 to 60 in 6 seconds and will put up with 8 MPG! I guess that means I'm looking for a flex plate for a 428 too, then. Nuts!

Thanks again for your time,

#####

Someone else might jump in here but I think the 390 fluwheel will work. You might want to look somewhere like summitracing.com for the flexplate. It isn't very expensive. Or you can post on the classifieds that you want to swap a 428 flywheel for a flexplate.

OK,thanks again, John. I will try the 390 flywheel and take my chances. Your suggestion about the classifieds is a good one, I'll see if I can figure out how to do that.

The 428 is the only FE that is externally balanced. Any non-428 flywheel that fits will work. As for mating the 428 to an automatic - you must use a 428 flex plate - again because of the external balance.
Good Luck
