Engine Starts in "Start",stops when "On"?!?!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the board. This is my first post! I have a 91 Aero XLT with the 3.0 ATX, and I cant seem to get it running. Now when the key is turned all the way forward into the start position it turns over and runs. If it's held there(bad for the starter, I know) the engine will run. But as soon as the key is released back into the run(on) position it dies. I've changed the ignition switch, starter, starter solenoid, has had a full tuneup last year-disty cap, plugs wires included, and I can't find whats going on. I figure something has to be grounding out somewhere but if anyone has had a similar problem please let me know. Thanks all.

Hi Shogun:

Welcome to our FTE forum

Your problem is a strange one I have never encountered, so I'll defer to the experts here.

But just out of curiosity, does the engine die right away after you let go of the key, or does it sputter for a while before dying?

Had a Dodge in the late 60's that did the exact same thing. It was a ballast resistor that was mounted on the firewall. Hmmmm -

Thanks for the welcome!
It dies out right away no sputtering. I have no clue what it could be. I thought it might have been the ignition switch but as I mentioned, I replaced it to no avail.

Take a look at your wiring diagram.

If it's wired the same as my 87 Ranger the coil is wired to a splice.

One wire from the splice connects to the "start" pin on the ignition switch & the other wire connects to the "run" pin of the switch.

If yours is wired this way, it looks like the wire to the "run" pin is broken.

I had a Tempo that would do this also. If I would turn the key back a little, the starter would disengage, but the engine would run until the switch was turned to "on" then it would die. There was a rod on that car that ran from the key tumblers to the switch. I had to ajust the switch on the column until it would stay running.

The first, check the ignition switch. Try co connect wire to + terminal of ignition coil and lead and connect it to any +12 terminal... inside the fuse box... if engine runs, check ECU and TFI voltage supply, but the ignition switch is usually sourse of th\e problem
