One Wire Alternator

Am doing an engine swap. 3.8 to 5.0 in my 83 F100. I ordered a new alternator and it came in and is a one wire setup. Can anyone tell me the proper way to convert from old wiring to one wire????????????

If it is a true one wire, the only wire needed is the feed line from the alternator to the battery, no other hookups necessary, but I would be sure the external regulator wires are not able to short out, as the switch will still send power to them all the same.

The alternator has internal regulator so shouldnt be a problem.

yeah, that's how they can do that, I was just referring to the wiring from the factory, you don't want it to short out. You could clip it and remove it, just don't let it get shorted out or anything. You could just leave the factory regulator if you want, it won't do anything.

OK, thanks for the advice. Do you happen to know anywhere I may be able to obtain a wiring diagram that will show me / help me wire in the new engine.
I left the factory harness under the hood, but need to splice into it to connect the engine which is no running a carb, HEI Ignition, no polution crap...etc...etc...

while they aren't the greatest, you can get the wiring diagrams from some CHilton's or Haynes manuals, but you may check with your local Ford dealer, they may have a bok yet. Most will let you take a look, photocopy it and all. Don't know until you ask. Basically though, you should be able to trace much of the wiring, coil, temp guage, oil guage and alternator are about all you need to know. Maybe a live for the choke if you are using an electric.
