I've got a '65 f100 (and a '55 for that matter), but about the '65. I was reading all the post about power steering conversion, and everyone said the steering column would have to be shortened, however reading the archives from about a year ago, someone stated that with a BENDIX gear box up to year '70 you did not have to change the shaft lenth. Can anyone tell me if this is true or not and is it a direct bolt in replacement? Any help would be great. Also can anyone tell me if there is a serpentine belt conversion for FE's and where to get it? Preferably billet or chrome(dressing up the truck to show AND drive). Will settle for v-belt if not available, but again where?
Scott, The newer gear has a section on top where the lines connect that the other doesn't have. You have to have a shorter column shaft, not column, to compensate for the gear. If your truck has an automatic I would swap in the shaft or the complete column rather than hunt for the bendix. Either gear is a direct swap to the chassis.

The Bendix does bolt right in but it is expensive, scarce, and not very durable. I used one because it is the only "right" one for my restored '66.
Eric
i used a bendix gear box on my first 66 to retain my factory column. they are expensive and difficult to find a core but i used one anyway. the swap still required removing 5/8" from the steering column shaft. in my 2nd 66 i'm using a ford box and i'll alter the column and the shaft if i have to because the bendix gear box makes it difficult to use any headers outside the factory logs. even 406 shorty headers won't work. good luck on your swap. thanks. jim.
