overdrive trouble

need some help. 1996 ford econoline van with a 5.0 e4od tranny. problem is the tranny will not allow me to turn the overdrive off for towing. have replaced the switch on the shifter lever, and checked the wiring and fuses. does anyone know what my problem may be. thanks

I would suggest calling your local Transmission Repair place and asking them. Most places are pretty good about giving you suggestions. Good Luck!

Does the "off" switch light when you cancel OD?

Its a common problem for the wiring in the column to fail and cause this problem. The fix is to replace the shifter.

no the light does not appear when trying to turn it off. however the light does flash when you start the vehicle. i will still check the wires in the shifter. thank you. brett

Same problem in my 2004 V10 E350. Took to dealer, turned out to be a short in the selector / button.

OD problems-me too!

1995 E-250, 300 i/l 6, 4spOD, overdrive button does not work for me either. Tried button from son's '97 F-150, same buttom, mine works on his truck, his doesn't on mine, so mine is not the button.

Is there a relay somewhere? Fuses OK.

No relay. There is a common problem where the wires break where they enter the shifter handle inside the steering column. Remove the plastic cover from the steering column (3 screws) and you'll see the broken wires.
