I just bought an 85 f250 today. I am rebuilding my mustang and needed a truck to drive.
The placard in the front of the engine compartment says it has a 5.8L. How do I tell if that is the actual engine that is still in the truck.
What kind of transmission (manual) is in it.
The gear shifter is very loose and makes it hard to get it into 4th. I took it apart when I got home and it looks like one of the other owners just stuck a piece of metal in to stop it from moving it around but its not big enough. I fabbed up a bigger piece of metal and stuck it in the slot and it tightened it up a little but I want it to be stiff like a shifter should be how can I fix this.

anothe way to tell is look at the valve covers ... count how many bolts.. hold it in ...... i believe... on the 5.8 windsor the covers are held on by 6 bolts.. and i wanna say .. the 302.. valve covers are held on by 7 or 5... not sure on that.. but im sure on the winsor ones.. if that helps at all so if the valve covers have 6 bolts.. you got a 5.8L.... 351w on your hands.. for a motor.. hope that helps.. and if you cant tell by that..look at your intake.. it should have a number on that says.. 351 if it is a 351... but i doubt they would put a 302 in a f-250.......so i hope this helps...
the 302 and the 351W are almost identical. The only parts that aren't interchangeable are the intake, crankshaft, and the oil pan. The 302 and 351w will have the same amount of VC bolts as the heads are swappable. Look at the distributor, if the base of it is about equal with the bottom of the intake manifold, its a 302 if there is a gap of 1-2" it's a 351W.
Blackmagic-yeah they did put 302's in the F-250, they even put the 300 in lot of them. They put lower gears in the axle to help compensate for it.
oh no **** i didnt know that... i knew they put the 300's cuz those have mad torque.. but yes.. you are correct on the 302's... yea i didnt know 302s and 351's had same vc bolts.. i could of swore they were 1 off.. but hey thats wat this forum is about lol
The number of VC bolts is handy for figuring out the difference between the 351W and the 351C, I think the 351M has a different amount as well. Too many motors of the same displacement. sheesh
