What good, if any, does it do to rebuild the head on an engine without also rebuilding the bottom end? The reason I ask is that I have to replace one of the lifters and thought I might as well replace all the lifters and pushrods, and put a new head on the engine.
This months Hot Rod gives the answer I knew long ago. They did a rebuild on a junkyard Poncho 400. The first few mods gained some power, but the bottom end soon gave it up. And a couple of cam lobes were bad.
So, do it the right way the first time, and don't expect a worn engine to do anything but wear out faster if you perk it up.
Would ceratinly depend on the life of the engine..some #'s from a compression check/leakdown etc.. Hell if your going to do all that because you need a new lifter .. why bother asking --rebuild....
