I have trouble starting my truck when it is cold or has been sitting for about five hours or hell even two but the wierd thing is when i sit there trying to start it, cranking for ever, smoke is pouring out of my stacks, do you think i should replace my starter? Also the volt meter does not go to the middle it stays in the green but do you think i need a new alternator, when staying in the green maybe one line in or so not much more from red lines
My truck is an 89, i am pretty sure the glow plugs are working, when i am cranking it over the rpm's are at 250-300, the glow plugs have a push button installed on them and the light stays on for about 6 or 7 seconds max but i always hold it a bit longer i just replaced the glow plugs less than 4k miles ago they are autolite glow plugs, i have had to use a little starting fluid the past two mornings, it has been about 50 here in wisconsin and to quit the hasselin around i just tried it without the either than had to resort to it as my final step.
now we see why we don't use autolites not to good of gp and hope they all come out ok cause they just don't like either or heat or anything eles go to az and get the beru they are the best in my oppn
if you put autolite glow plugs in there, it is almost a gaurentee they are bad.
go to autozone and get a set of MOTOCRAFT/BERU glow plugs. the part number for your 89 will be the ZD9's
if you do not have an autozone nearby, you can get them from www.autozone.com they only cost $9.99 each.
I have the same problem. Not too long ago I had my glow plugs checked (about 5-6 months ago)and 1 was replaced. I would say about 4k miles ago. This morning it took about 3 tries to get her started. Each try I would crank it about 7-8 seconds. Not until the second crank did it start to catch and then fired up the first crank on the third try. Any thoughts? I have not done anything with the fuel system since I bought it and only recently has it started acting up...
