The Ford truck P/S gearbox is a saginaw recirculating ball design, which uses a spool valve to divert high pressure fluid from the p/s pump for the purpose of power assisted steering. As you turn the wheel, the valve opens on that side of the gearbox and high pressure fluid does the rest. Unfortunately, it is really a specialist item when it comes to repair and rebuilding. Because of the high risk of something binding if you set the clearances improperly, it's best to replace the gearbox with a reman unit if it is not working. Basically, If the pump is good, then there is only one other working part in the p/s sytem - the gearbox. Fortunately, it's not a difficult repair. Three large bolts to retain the box, two hose connections, one drag link connection, and a bolt in the steering shaft.
