what was the lowest gear in a 9 inch rear and what did thay come in i am on the hunt for a good rear end on the cheap some one told me about a f 350 with 4.88 gears how big of a rear end would that be, to big for a car or to wide any help would be great thanks
The lowest gears made were not available from the factory - aftermarket only.
An F-350 is going to have either a Dana 70, sterling 10.25 or sterling 10.5 - depending on the year. You'd have to get a pretty early F-350 to get 4.88 gears. I know in the 80's and 90's you could only find 4.10's from the factory.
It would also be an 8 lug full floating axle, which is pretty big for anything but a truck.
I guess the question is, what is this going into and what do you want it to do?
well this will be going to be going in to an out law demolition derby car so size is not to much of a problem but i dont want a big 3/4 ton full floter i would like it to be a 5 or 6 bolt i am trying to get the lowest factory rear end gear i can find in something very strong so i can beat the crap out of it and not blow up the pumkin or bust an axle
If you want 5.14 gears, then you will definitely have to go aftermarket. You'd need to buy a ring & pinion and an install kit. Then take it to someone if you don't know how to do it yourself - it's not a shadetree job.
