psd or 5.4L

Hi i was looking at the new f-150 supercrew but the bed is only 5'5ft which is far to small but i could get a bed extender if i really had to,I have heard the 5.4L is bad on gas.
the psd seems to be good on mpg but is it sluggish? so i am not sure weather to buy the f-150 supercrew with the 5.4L or the f-250 superduty with the psd or maybe with the v10 but i don't know anything about them.

You could wait until the new 6.0litre diesel comes out and it has 350 hp and 600lbs. ft. of tourque. to say the least I would think this is not sluggish. My suggestion would be to take a few out on a test drive and see what you like best. Good Luck

Official Horsepower of the 6.0L PSD is 325 and Torque is 550, but that can change prior to production.

The V-8 is a fine choice as long as you will not be doing a lot of heavy hauling/towing. If you are yanking a boat once in a while the 5.4 will be fine. The 5.4 can be perked up pretty easily with intake and exhaust mods like the diesel can. If you plan on putting big skins on, go with the V-10.

A lot of people underestimate the mileage of the V-10. For most people the V-10 will perform close to the 5.4, maybe a bit better when hauling. The V-10 is best if you need to haul regularly and make a lot of short (less than 10 miles or so). Remember the truck will weigh about 7000# the V-10 doesn't have to work nearly as hard to make it move as the V-8 does.

The PSD, even in current form is no slug. An Amsoil or K&N air filter and a free flowing exhaust (I like the Dynomax) alone will reduce the turbo lag. You can do this for about $300. Try a MicroTuner for another $300 or so and you got something. Do not consider the PSD unless you are driving at least 15 miles or so per trip. Diesels need to warm up and run, they are not the best for short trips. Plus they are $4000 or so more than the V-10, close to $5000 more than the V-8.

Drive them and find out.

In my opinion, the 3/4 ton trucks are a better value if you're on the edge. I like to think that everything down to the wheel bearings are stronger and will last longer. I have no evidence of this and someday someone ought to publish a very detailed point by point comparison of 1/2 vs 3/4 vs 1 ton.
