pulling axle...HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM.

Ok, I have a 86 f150 2wd I removed the wheel I then removed the drum, I then removed the 4 retainer nuts. I then put the slide hammer to the rear axle gave it a shot, and the brake backing plate is coming off with it. Did I do something wrong? (or) should I have removed the brakes before pulling the axle.
I need to replace the gear housing gasket so I need to pull the axles.

any help would be appriciated. I havn't touched the other side yet!

Thanks in advance!

Al

Assuming this is an 8.8 axle, you have to remove the inspection cover and pull the c-clips out to remove the axles.

Those same 4 bolts are what hold the backing plate, so it will move some, that is normal. You may have to help it stay put some, but it isn't a press fit by any means.

Work the plate back over the bearing...it is normal!
