Talking ford trucks longevity

Well,

My father in law came to visit this weekend, he was remarking on how my current truck (04 Fx4 Supercab) will never make it as long as my last truck.

I sold my 93 F150 4.9 six when I bought my new truck 2 years ago, it had almost 200k on it...I sometimes still see it around my old neighborhood when I go back to Long Island, guy I sold it to says it still runs great!!!!!

I am 100% satisfied with the 5.4L...I do oil changes every 3500, did the tranny fluid at 25k, and will keep meticulous maintenance on it.

I bet him I will get 300K miles on it..he said no way, not a chance.

Thoughts????????

I think Ford expects 250K-300K out of the modular motors. At least the stealer told me the motor should take 280K no problem.

I also had a 93 with the 4.9 sixer, that motor was bullet proof. Had the 5 speed manual. went through 2 clutches, traded it with 198,000 miles, only a slight drip from the rear main seal. I hope my 5.4 gets 200,000 miles.

While it isn't 300k miles, I sold my 2000 F150, 4.2V6, 5 speed, at 170,000 miles. It was in great shape.
Ran fine. Leaked nothing. Burned no oil between 5k mile changes.
It was just a darned good truck. I could see 250,000 miles on that truck easy with proper maintenance.

I traded my 97 with a 5.4L in at 125K miles. i changed the sparkplugs around that time. it run very well leaked nothing and used nothing. My cousin bought it from the dealer that i traded it to and it now has 161K and still in the same shape. Brother i think its money in the bank. You made a good bet now just keep it between the ditches.

Thumbs up

Traded my 94 in on the 06 and we still see the 94 around town.We put 3800 miles on the new truck in two weeks(quick trip to Texas)and no quality problems.Truck has the 5.4 flex fuel. Now our 91 town car has the 4.6 and just turned 211,000 and never had it apart!just change fluids like the book calls for.

What else can i say.

Sold a 93 with 300 5 speed to my little brother at 156,000. He drove it for a few years and just sold it to his neighbor with 225,000. Never anything done to engine. Neighbor still driving.

People complain about short life span of brakes and things like that ,but 200,000 out of a 70' or 80's model V8 was pretty unusual

I traded in my 96 reg cab 302 with 156k on it, not a single thing wrong with it, just needed the 06 for the supercab with my daughter. I really do miss the 96 sometimes. It was such a great truck. As for the 5.4L, I don't know, I'm still hung up on the old pushrod motors.

the 5.4 as an engine will last a long time we have over 65 2003-2005 f-150-350 trucks and most have over 190K all used in heavy service. the transmissions will go before the engine and so will the sensors. seems to be very common to have to replace coil packs and MAF sensors on the 2002-2004 trucks. the 05 3v engines seem to have bad cam senors which ford has since fixed with a new part and the updated parts have not failed again so all is well.

I think the 300 six was ( Is ) the best engine made.

It was in ford trucks in the 60's

As for the 330 and the 415 time will tell, try back in 20 years.

It takes time to get all of the bugs out of engines

You will exceed 200,000 miles without a doubt. We have 2001 4.2V-6 with 215,000 and going strong never been opened up also have 5.4L and 4.6L with over 250,000 and none of them even burn any oil. Just do the service at required intervals and it will go.

I would have to agree on the 300 six's longevity, I have a 93 with 182,000
5 speed manual, and the original clutch, I hope my 06 5.4 last as long

thanks for all the input everyone...

Yes, I still miss my 93 I-6, that was some engine, never burned/leaked a drop of fluid, but I needed something with 4wheel drive after moving to Northern CT, hence the FX4.

I hope I get 300k out of it, so far so good.
