got an 88 with the six. Bought it cheap and have done a decent amount of work on it. It has new filters (oil, gas, and air), new plugs, wires, D-cap, rotor, bunch of other stuff that's not important to this question. Still not running right though. At high RPM runs great. When the engine is cold runs great. After it gets to full operating temp I start having a little trouble. It will miss at low RPM in first and second gear after sitting at idle for a while. As long as I keep some gas in it clears itself and runs fine in the rest of the gears(ie. airflow helps). I figured the new plug wires would fix it because this is obviosly heat related but it didn't. My next guess is the coil or distributer or maybe timing. If anyone knows it will be you guys. Thanks in advance!
i would check the fuel pressure to make sure its getting enough pressure (45-60 psi). also, test the CTS (coolant temp sensor) located in the neck of the water pump.
I don't think it's fuel related. As I said it will run all day at high RPM so if the fuel pres. was low I think that would be when I had trouble. Why test the CTS? Engine doesn't seem to run hot or cold but, just right. I'm really leaning towards an ignition issue. I can't think of anything else that gets warm and quits working.
I had a Corvair with a bad, new rebuilt alternator that ran like crap when it warmed up. The reman forgot to install a nut on one of the conections inside of the alt. I found the problem after replacing the wire harness in the engine among other parts. The alt tested ok on a bench test, but shorted out because of arcing and heating caused by the missing nut.
i had a smiular problem on my 94 4.9. i came to find out it was the ignition. i replaced the cap and coil and i had no problems since. you may also want to check you voltage regulator that can also cause rough running.
Check and see if you have any carbon or sludge build up on the throttle body just behind your throttle plate. This can cause missing and hesitation on low rpms.
You might want to check the idle air control valve. I had some of the same problems and change all the basics. When I changed the valve out the problem is gone.
