Is there a trick to getting it off? I have the pull out type switch, obviously.

 

If you want to remove the ****, you have to depress the metal button on the body of the switch to get it to release the shaft that the **** is attached to. Later models you can get the **** off the shaft by lifting the spring steel clip in the back side of the **** once you have it out of the switch. Not certain that this part is possible with all models.

 

I was working with poor light and could only see a little notch at the base and a little metal clip or something metal visible. Do I just yank it out?

 

If you can see/access the metal clip for the **** somehow with it pulled out, then yeah, you can get the **** off without removing the shaft. But usually its just easier to depress the button on the metal side of the switch body (near the shoulder in the metal) and pull. It sometimes takes a little effort and wiggling to free it.

 

aha, you mean where the shaft goes into the switch I take it? Thus, I pull the plastic trim off then reach behind there?
