99, 7.3 180k oil changed @ 5000 since new, now adding Lucas 2qt ea. change, not because of excess usage but occasional tap, tap, tap. might be 2min. after start up or might start after pulling 10k tra. 500mi. or not for a wk. or two or ma by tomorrow, sounds like a lifter in a gas engine to me, but head into a repair shop any were and quiet as a mouse EVERY TIME, been going on about a year now, dealership says no idea without hearing it. driving me nuts only does it at idle in gear automatic, put it in neutral or accelerate in gear its gone any suggestions anyone, thanks Phil.
Next time you hear it, look at your fuel level. If it is at or below 1/4 tank, or even just after a fill up, you are probably getting air in with you fuel and that will cause some injector knocking. You can go to the 7.3 forum https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum31/ or do a search on in tank mods or hutch mod to advoid these air in fuel problems if that is you case.
went to the sites you suggested but eventually its over my head, but I'll bet your right about the injector tapping, had #8 replaced wile on trip, then had to have it done again when i got home due to dealership shorting out wires with rocker cover, didn't notice tapping then couple of mo. later had dealership replace water pump, then taping started but never at or near dealership, but i do believe it is right after I, fill up or low tank, so now in novice terms how fix please? thanks Phil.
Phil, the easiest way is keep your tank above a 1/4 full. The way our in tank fuel pickup is designed it will suck air at or below 1/4 tank. The quick connect fitting between the tank and pump also allow air to enter the fuel lines and get to the injectors.http://www.dieselinnovations.com/di....products&cat=2 Sells a kit to elimante the problems. http://www.dieselinnovations.com/tec...k-pump-kit.pdf Here is the instructions on their kit.
A lot of the guys here get the parts and put it together their selves. I haven't done it yet, but it is on my list. http://community.webshots.com/album/32303501JuYKPH This decribes it well. http://community.webshots.com/album/32614313yLKyrS/1 Same with regulator https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...mmon-mods.html This link has a lot of good reading on most of the common mods and repair for our trucks.
Go to the blue line and go to search, then advanced search. Search Hutch mod or Pre pump mod or in tank mod in the 99-03 7.3 diesel and you will have enough reading that you will be the expert on tank mods.
thanks so much, very helpful. now I know what to do. Phil
Glad I could help. Sorry I could'nt give you a straight answer on the fix. I know that this is a lot of reading. As I said, I still have'nt done it yet. Although I believe this to be a great improvment for our trucks, I still may not cure your tapping problem if it is something other than air causing it. Try keeping your tank above 1/2 full for a while and see if that helps. Good luck and let us know.
I sent you a PM.
