Saggin' Bumper Blues

The factory chrome bumper on my '94 was saggin' at the corners when removed before we began the body work.

Now, I have a premium paintable bumper from LMC Truck, and I want to try and prevent bumper saggin' in the future.

The weak point of these bumpers looks to be the "lip" that rolls under from the top on the backside of the bumper. The mounts bolt to this "lip". On my factory bumper, it looks as if the "lip" was bent out some, contributing to the sag, IMO.

I have thoughts of installing the new bumper with the original mounts, setting it just right, tightening it down, then taking some steel tubing and MIG weld the steel tubes to the bumper, then to the truck's frame.

This should prevent any future sagging.

I haven't done any measuring of any sort, and I'm not even sure if what I stated above will, in fact, work. But, I figure there has to be something under there with some structural integrity to weld the tubes to to prevent the sag.

Any other ideas?

I'm not sure how this is going to affect the crumple zone in the frame right behind the bumper. None of us ever wants to wreck our truck, but that crumple zone is designed to collapse part of the truck before it starts collapsing your bones.

Are you sure the truck hasn't already bumped something and bent some parts.

Not that I know of. This is something that I'm thinking is common on these trucks, as I see alot of F-150's around with the bumper issues.

I'm not all that worried about the crumple zones. Some minor steel tubing is going to bend to the obliverate force of a collision. Although, it should provide 'just enough' support to keep the bumper straight.

Thanks for your input.

I guess, but the bumper on my '92 is in perfect order. I'm the OO on the truck, so I've taken pretty good care of it. 138K, and nothing sagging or bent anywhere.

I've seen bumper sag on trucks that have been used for towing with a hitch ball on the bumper.
