I was browsin through the forums and started reading a thread that "84 400" posted about a F250 he was considering buying. He said that he was considering building a wooden flatbed for it.
I got to thinkin and thought that this was a great idea. My beds not in horrible shape, its got a lot of rust in the bed and the wheel wells are rusted out, has dents, but i've alsays wanted a flatbed.
Me and my father would have no problem building this thing but my question is this.
What would be the most prefered wood to use for this application. What would be the best thing to do or treat the wood with to keep it from rotting?
Well, this is more of a woodworker's topic than 73-79 truck topic but
some people have used Oak,Ash & Elm plus a few others.
It should be a hardwood for sure.
as million has mentioned, hard wood is best. my sons 85 f250 4x4 has a steel framed flat deck from a 5 ton truck.the actual deck planks are pressure treated hard wood.this truck is not a show truck, its a functional work truck.complete with winch tie downs, head ache rack, flood lights.
nice input guys. i am glad you liked the idea of a flat bed i think it would look real classy. if i were you i would use a hard wood. MAn i could only how tuff a bed made from dark wallnut would be, and pricey. if you want a nice clean look i would steer clear of pressure treated. i think with a nice varnish and multiple coats with a light sanding with 10 to 220 grit in between it would look sweet. If you have a compresser why not lay down some clear coats over the varnich for that extra layer. but if you really use your truck it will still come off
good luck and if you found some pics pass me the link
I'm not really lookin for classy, but i've always like flatbeds. I don't do a large ammount of hauling but when I do its always something really large or heavy.
I have been just keeping an eye open for some old farm trucks and such. I have found two used flatbeds for around $300 to $350 and they are all steel. Altt they needed was paint and had one or two bent spots that hold the mud flaps.
