Recently purchased a used 78 300 I-6. The previous owner indicated that the lower end was rebuilt 60K ago. The original head was torn apart, so I just purchased a rebuit one (new valves w/ new springs etc). Bolted the head on last week and manually adjusted the valves with the old lifters, push rods, and rocker assembly. The lifters are pumping oil through the push rods and filing the top of the rockers. The push rods are straight and have some deposits on them. The fulcrums are a little worn as well. Here is the question. Once manually adjusted, I started the engine and proceeded to fine tune the lash while the engine was running. Needless to say ALL of the the lifters chatered. I attempted tighten each to elimiate the chatter, but the rockers were bottomed out on the pedestal (no more thread to tighten).
Is this the wrong head?
Can I use stainless steel washers between the nut and the fulcrum to obtain more adjustment?
your lifters are just too gummed up to allow you to adjust the valves easily. Run your engine with a quart of Mystery oil replacing a
qt of oil and it may loosen them up. Run the Mystery oil for about 50-100 miles and then chg the oil. See if that helps reduce the chatter and try your adjusting again. If you see an improvement repeat this process again just before your next oil change in a few months.
