HI everyone,
Time to add disc brake set up to 1975 F-250 4X4. I already added the power steering box from a 1979 , have the disc brake front end all tore apart , except removing the axle joints and was wondering how this could be made easy !!!! there very rusty.
I usually put them in a vice and smack the yoke with a hammer.
I second the big hammer method. A little heat can help but I'm leary of getting them too hot as I don't know how it will affect the temperment of the material and I don't want to make the ears brittle. Soak them with PB Blaster and let it penetrate overnight so the caps can slide more easily.
Also, and I'm sure you've done this but just in case, make sure you've removed the inner clips that hold them in the ears of the axle shaft. I watched one guy wail on his forever and they wouldn't budge. Turns out he didn't remove the clips.
The best way I have ever found to removing axle u joints is to cut the cross yoke out with a torch and drive the caps out through the middle. This keeps from bending the axle yoke ears in and the heat makes the caps drive out easier. It doesn't transfer enough heat to cause any problems with the metalurgy of the axles. The worst part about it is that it tends to make a mess with the burning grease. Use a short metal pan to set the axle in while your cutting. I learned this from a local 4wd shop and have changed hundreds of u joints this way.
