Well... I got my 4x4 up and running. It has a new C6, by new I mean that it was professionally rebuilt. It goes into all gears and shifts normally, it just seems like its slipping really bad. I think it has a 1600 stall convertor, but I don't know for sure. Its behind a pretty stout 400 motor in my 79 F150 and the motor is new too. I put 5 quarts in the tranny before it filled up the tube. Then I did my cam break in and kept checking the fluid level but it never went down. After the cam break in I let everything cool down while I fixed the fan shroud and checked it again. I started it and went through all the gears and added a little more fluid, to a total of about 8.5 quarts. It won't take any more and other than being sluggish its fine. Is this pretty normal or should I be worried?
That stall is a little higher than stock but not anything crazy. It'll take a little more throttle to get rolling but not by much. What exactly is it doing when you say it's sluggish? Does it feel "sluggish" on take off or while you're cruising or does it feel like it's actually slipping? And if it does feel like it's slipping is it only happening in one gear or all of them?
8.5 quarts of fluid? you have filled it up yet. You should at least have 15 quarts
and if you have any larger coolers it will take more. Mine will take 18 because I have a larger cooler installed.
It has the factory radiator cooler. My book says 10-12 quarts of fluid. Its only sluggish on take off and if I give it a little too much throttle it just breaks the tires loose so I have to be careful, although I do work in a tire shop, so tires are free anyway.
It shifts fine and it was better today... I think it was that way just because its new. I don't think they require any adjustment after installation. I checked the fluid everywhere I stopped today and it never went down or had any metal in it, I have 4 more quarts on hand just in case.
