points
1) measure the voltage from the + terminal on the coil to ground. It should be ~10 volts running.
2) If voltage is high like 13.5 and higher check your voltage regualtor. If bad replace with a soild state unit. (autozone has two types one is short protected! spend the extra dollar for it = $11.95)
3) do step one again if its still high get a universal ballast resitor and screw it to the fire wall and cut the + wire from the coil and go to one side of the resitor and one the other conect the harness from the ign switch.
4) Or do what i did and use a MSD 6a box and never have a problem again. If an MDS is to much try a Petzitronic ignitor its a soild state converter kit for point distribs.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Install a Pertronix Ignitor instead of points (two screws and a couple of wires) and get on with your life. Maybe add a hot coil, flat cap, fat wires and a set of platinium plugs gapped at 60.William in Atlanta

PS: JC Whitney has the Pet ignitoer units for ~$65 last i looked
