Ford never really made a performance version of the 460, the early models look a lot better for 2 reasons one they did have a little higher compression and they had a straight up timing chain which was changed later for emissions purposes, and second and most important they changed the way that the HP was measured, truth is none are really any better. The best 460 is the one you built to suit your purposes.

from what i know the early models had a shorted deck hight and smaller cc heads with non polution heads but monster is right i have built up older blocks and newer and they are all the same you can deck the newer blocks to gain some comp and even block and shave d3 heads but any how i was told the badest is a 429 scj

Well he asked what was the baddest 460, if you want to throw in 429s then I would have to say the Boss 9 is the baddest of the 385 series engines.

The thunderjet was the passenger car 429 4V motor, nothing special. Yes the Boss 9 was a factory engine, total production was 1358, most in mustangs but 2 were put into cougars.

Too bad the Boss 9 only has a few parts that interchange with a normal mass produced engine. I have seen Boss heads swapped over to a normal 385 block but there were a lot of changes that needed to be made with the top end.

well in the mid 70's ford produced interceptor engines and they had a little better hp and tq the ports in the heads were larger and the bore was a little more they produced about 230 hp so yeah i dont have any numbers to give you at the moment but if i can find my book i will drop them onto this post.

The best 460 to get if you are looking at a stock motor is a 1968 to 1970. They have the highest amount of horsepower & torque.

I totally agree with catmandu79!
Scroll down on the link below down to "460" for the basic info you're requesting.
68-70 had the highest outputs with least smog BS BTW. I think it was 70 when they drilled the air injection holes into some of the heads for smog rales, but they were good too. Just gotta plug them holes up.

Not sure about that police intercepter though....
