Well, let me start off by saying I'm not 100% to blame. On with the story, I was a my friend's house today helping him load up his trucks for the demolition derbies tomorrow, and he asks if could fix my exhaust because it annoys him to see it hang. Well he welds it the frame. I didn't realize he was welding anything, but it happened. So when I got in the truck my battery light in the truck came on and is still on, but have had no trouble starting it (been driving it all over tonight) and it is running like normal. Any idears? 01 F150 2wd V6 5Spd Reg Cab Stepside Bed.
Sounds like it may have burned a diode. It may drain the battery overnite. Have it tested on a machine at your local autoparts store.
You may also check all of the fuses under the hood in the power dist. box. It may have blown the alt. fuse.
You know they always say...Disconnect your battery....before you do anything. It may even say that on the back of a new air freshener, but Ive never heard of some one actually hurting anything by not disconnecting the batteries. Maybe this is what happened with all the amperage from the welder. Let us know what you find out.
Alternator burned up. Sorry LXman, i shouldn't have jumped so quick. The truck did hold a charge overnight, and the ammeter wasn't abnormal. I haven't changed it yet so Im not 100% but i went through three batteries today (spares are nice )
Only the tail pipe is welded to the frame. And it only has to last a few more months. As soon as I pay this one off I am getting a new one. (bought it 06/01 66 month lease puts me in december)
I did the "Weld a nut to the broken exhaust stud" trick. It took a few trys, but I got them out. i disconnected the battery as instructed. i got the truck back together (All of this being done outside in the snow). The truck cranks over fine but won't even give me a sputter. It was running fine before all of this. I have not had time to start digging into it. The ground on the welder was only about a foiot from where I was welding. My understanding is that the current will only flow between the two points. Unrelated? to me it doesn't seem so. Any thoughts?
