My wife and I are looking at two 1999 explorers. Both Eddie Bauer package and both with mileage in the 20k area. One has V8 and dealer is asking 19k. The other has a V6 and the dealer is asking 17k. They are actually the exact same colors inside and out and the V8 explorer has a cd changer, other than that identical. My question: is the V8 worth 2k? I think not, just because my wife has a lead foot to begin with and a V8 will just make her worse. Let the opinions/answers roll in.
What exactly are you going to be doing with the Explorers? Unless you will be fully loaded and towing a trailer stay away from the V8 it will just suck way to much gas. The 4 litre 6 cyl is a good engine but does drink a fair bit as well. $17,000 for a 99 Explorer Eddie Bauer seems like a fair price but not pull out the check book great. According to kelly blue books retail value the v6 shows up at around $18,000 depending on options. I hope this helps a little. Good Luck
This vehicle will be used for my wife to get to work and home and to get groceries. I have a Bronco that I use for any real work that needs to be done. I have not done any negotiating yet and I think with a week of bad weather I should find the sales staff very friendly and willing to work hard for my business.
Right now I have a 99 explorer XLT top of the line power everything and leather and 90,000km on the 4.0L but it needs a paint job. We are asking $20,000 to give you an idea of where these ones are at. My Price is in Canadian as well.
I have a 98 V8 and a 91 4.0 OHV. The V8 gets about 1 mpg less on the highway, and about 3 mpg less locally. But it also has AWD, which is the greater difference, in my opinion.
I like the 4.0 OHV a lot, though sometimes if I had more power I would use it. I have read (on this board) so many bad things about the OHC 4.0, that if I had the choice, I would choose the V8 over it.
Of course my v8 is a 5.0. I'm not sure when they changed it to the 4.6.
