Tires

Have a 53 pickup, modified with a TCI front and rear suspension, Ford 302 w/AOD. I am ready to buy tires. What are the pros and cons on running passenger car tires. The truck will not be hauling anything but two people.
Thanks in advance.

Run the same type tires front and back or it will handle "funny". You might want to look at the P235/75R15XL "Xtra Load" tires. With those mods it ain't a pickup anymore, more like a car.

I run Goodyear Eagle GTII (car tires) all around. If the truck is used as a car, car tires are fine.

What kind of rims are you running? what size are they? Do you want same or different widths of tire front and rear? Is your truck a rod or stocker? How much money do you want to spend? (Inquiring minds want to know.)

I think Coker radial wide whitewalls look faboo on a stocker. I think the widest meat that will fit under the rear fenders looks killer on a rod.

Let the opinions begin!!!

I've got Cooper Cobra 275/60 15's mounted on 10" wheels on all four corners. Doesn't steer like a Porsche, but THE LOOK; OH YEAH!!

I'm going with the traditional 255/70r15 rear, 235/70r15 front combo on my '48. Probably Cooper's unless I talk one of the other manufacter's into a free set (I'm in the tire wholesale business). As long as you go with a reasonably sized tire, load index of about 100 or higher, you'll be safe. The load index is the number/letter combo after the size. P235/70r15 102T. 102 is the load index, meaning the tire has a max load of 1815 lbs at 35 psi, which is about right for our trucks. The bigger the number, the higher the weight capacity. One tons use a LI of about 120-123 for comparison. You may have to tell the tire salesman what that means. Decide on the stance you want, and the look. Same size all around, big and littles etc, pick what type of wheel you like and start shopping. (Stepping on my soapbox now) Unless your roads are smooth where you live, I would avoid the 18" and larger wheels, unless that's really the look you're after. The larger diameter wheels mean much shorter sidewalls. The ride suffers, and impact damage is much more common. (Stepping down now) When you have a few options in mind, post them. You'll get lots of adivce.
