When I went to get parts for ranger I just bought they asked if it had STX or not . What is this option? My truck is 1987 reg cab 4x4 with 2.9 v6 and shift on fly transfer case.
Stickers on the side of a mostly plain truck & a 2" oem lift kit. Was supposed to appeal to younger crowd. Also most pics of it by Ford showed it with a grill-guard & roll bar.
it was an ingeinous way to suck cash outta the younger crowed by putting $100 worth of mods on it, then selling the same thing for 1k more. Smart if you think about it.
heh my 86 XL has the factory 2 inch lift. just not the guards or stx badges which actualy was a badge on the rear bed rail till 89 then it was a cheap sticker.
The STX package was Ford's "sporty" package for the Ranger. It came with the upgraded aluminum wheels, bucket seats, STX decal set, wider wheel base, 4X4, and 6 cyl engine(either 2.9L or 4.0L depending on year). It probably also came with a more agressive, off -road type tire.
Too specific. They didn't really stick to that closely. Mine had the 60/40 seats and yeah, no guards. I put buckets from a minivan in. I seem to remember seeing quite a few ads & saw a few at dealers with a 3.0. Haven't seen a 4.0 yet. They dropped it for most of the 90's, though didn't they? I do say it does have a pretty cool wide stance with Nokian Vatiiva rubber, esp with front mudguards long gone. Cruds up the backs of my mirrors all the time, too. Looks like a burly little trail toy. The thing to watch for dealing with parts is the front end parts. Up to around '90, it's spec'd for Dana 28, but at end of that era, they tried to faze it out to Dana 35 in crazy ways. Mine has full Dana 35. Goofy.
'97 was the last model year the STX package was offered. I don't doubt that there are a few STX's with a 3.0L in them, but that is a rare truck, nealry all of them had either the 2.9L or 4.0L. Also forgot to mention earlier that the STX package included fog lamps. In my opinion, they were the best looking trim package you could get on a Ranger, sharp looking trucks. Maybe I'm a little biased though, I previously owned a '87, and later a '93 Ranger STX.
I believe another STX trim package was introduced somewhere around '00 model year. That package truly was just decals.
I am the second owner of a 94 STX 4X4 extended cab. Option include the graphic stripes (STX sticker), OEM 2" lift, aluminum wheels w/ 265/75/15 tires, fender flares, fog lights, 8.8 L/S 3.73 rear, dana 35 front, 4.0L OHV, M50D-R1 5 speed, high back bucket seats w/ air pump lumbar and knee raiser, power windows, locks, and mirrors, air, and slider window.
Not sure of these aside from stickers make it an STX though.
That's all classic STX stuff. Didn't they all come with a stick, or was auto an option? I'm guessing it was, seems to be stupid if it wasn't if it was to appeal to the younger crowd.
Boy, that would be a hairy bit o' research. For the start, mine's stick (Mazda). I tried autotrader online & didn't come close to answers. These classic STX's are OLD. Actually, I chose this old beater for its very clean engine, stick and drivability last year. No A/C, no power mirrors or locks. It did come with the tape deck. Was $1800 with about 132k miles. The looks were a bonus.
Actually, there is something that might be much better on the newer body. The door locks. I can get into mine in about 2 minutes through the door without leaving noticable marks. Learned it when I locked my keys in cab with cap locked, too. Very special 1" band steel no hook. Kinda bugs me.
