Engine Light

2001 Ranger. The engine light just came on today. Is there a way by turning the ingition switch on several times to check the code? How do I know what the code means? Thanks

Get a code reader, only option. Actually I have heard you can take it to an auto store and they will read your code for you. But I've never done this so I wouldn't know where. Pretty sure it's free.

Any symptoms you'd care to share, it would give you and indication of how severe the issue is. Might be a trivial problem, something you can put off.

That's right, your '01 is OBD-II which means you need a code reader to pull codes. Someplace like Autozone will pull them for free, or you can pick up a small reader yourself that fits in the glove box and will read codes from virtually any '96+ vehicle. I've seen units like the Actron CP-9125 on eBay for under $50.

P.S. Welcome to FTE!

Yes, AutoZone was helpful when my check light came on. Told me what the code was, sold me the part to repair, and advised me how to install.
