Turbo Runout

I tried a search and didn't find what I needed. I am looking for the runout spec on the stock turbo. Doing some looking at mine the other day and I found written in pencil near the Garrett logo an arrow pointing up and .0083 written next to it. Any guesses?

runout? as in "side to side" play or "in and out" play? the maximum allowable in and out play is .0005", and maximum permissable side to side play is .015, which would equate to .0075 at the center of the shaft, which is should be measured at, however there is no access point.

Side to side...If you removed the compressor housing you could measure it then? Correct?

yes, this is how i did mine. alot easier with the turbo on a bench.

may not be the best way of measuring it, but it was coming apart. i was just playing around with the expensive tool.

the easiest way and to save yourself from some trouble, is to just push (with moderate pressure) each direction while spinning the wheel by hand. if the wheel contacts the compressor housing it's out of spec, way out of spec. if you get close but don't touch, it's fine. always touch the hex part and the round parts at the end of the compressor wheel, dont touch the blades or spin the wheel with your finger for amusement. the oils in your fingers can put the blades slightly out of balance. and at 130K+ rpm, a little bit can do alot of stuff.

End clearanse is .001 to .004 inches. There is no listing for runout. Something that spins as fast as a turbo would have a runout spec that is so small ie. (.00001) that it would be difficult to measure with normal shop tools.

OK Thanks guys...I'm grasping at straws over this surge problem. It's to the point anymore i cant accelerate over 2200 rpm and about 18 lbs boost. I'm thinking that a BB turbo might be in my future.
