i have a 2006 f250 5.4 3v 8ft bead supercab...i know its supposibly not enough power for my truck but i have no complaints except going up hills ... i have 3.73 gears and i do NO towing...will regearing it to say 4.10's change my ability to go up hills easier and will it help with acceleration...also will it kill my MPG's
First question, are you running larger tires? if so what size?
i've seen alot of people running 35-36" tires w/ V8's that are going to a 4.56 or 4.88 ratio. i have a V10 so i (as like a PSD owner) won't need as high of a gear as you may. if your running stock tires, i'd say go 4.30's that way if you jump 1 or 2 sizes you'll be OK. if your running upwards of a 35", look into a set of 4.56's or 4.88's! good rule of thumb........the more torque you have the less gear you need (lower number)!
no im stock and probably will go larger tires...as big as i can get without a lift but im actually concerned about mpg's BEFORE i put the larer tires on and also what kind of gas mileage will i lose with just the gear change and what kind with the tire and gear combo....also what is the price range on new gears?
if your stock now, but have large tires in the future...........i'd say 4.30's or 4.56's max!!
go to www.tyres1.com and use there gear calculator, and that will give you a beter idea of what you ARE running now, and WHAT you'll end up w/ if you change. here's anouther web site that will give you a rough estimate of what your rpm's will change to : www.accuautoparts.com
i used it when doing my gear change. it was off about 3-400 rpm's on my tach, probably due to the site doesn't calculate for Tourque Converter Lock-up! so i took notes while driving, and then compared them to the site. hope this helps out!
I have asked this in another thread, but this is gear specific, so I figured I would ask here as well.
I have a 2003 F250 CC V-10 with: 3.73 gears, stock size wheels and tires. My feeling right now is that the truck seems a bit sluggish in the low end/speed power range, such as from a dead standstill. I have NO plans to get larger tires. I would like to know if regearing to 4:10's, 4:30's or 4:56's would help improve acceleration from standstill.
Thanks........... (I know this might be a redundant posting) sorry guys..........

i was in the same boat, started w/ 32" tires (stock) and 3.73 gears. it would still pull, but LOVED to down shift on even the slightest incline pulling my mud truck.
i re-geared to 4.56's running 39.5's(rpm's @ 60mph = 1750-1800)! when i put the stock tires back on it runs the rpms up to about 21-2200 at 60mph. granted it loves that rpm range for cruisin, and pulls alot better in OD. so i guess concider what rpm's you want to run at road speeds and go from there!
i would say stay in the 4.30-4.56 range. acceleration will be awsome and highway speeds will run up the rpm's alittle, BUT you'll be right at the power when you hit the gas! check out the web sites i posted in the last threads and compare your rpm's and go from there!
I think I would be happy with the 4.30's I just need to find someone capable of doing it for me locally. Any comments about brand names for kits? Should I buy the kit and just pay a shop to do the install? Do the kits come complete or are there any hidden parts I might need? Thanks.
i went with the Yukon gears. they were alittle better priced and they're still high quality! i've heard BAD things about the Genuine brand gears from 4wheelparts.com!! they are way less than the othre brands but i'v heard horror stories about them!
Yukon, Precision, and Motive are about the top of the list i belive. i bought my gears and install kits for $550, did all the work myself (w/ the help of a friends shop for the bearing pullers and press) so i didn't worry about install costs. depends on the area but it could range from $300/axle to $700 depending on the shop!
