Bad luck

I'm new here.I have a 78 F150 with a 302 and a C4 trans. On the way back from picking up my 71 F100.The 78 motor stopped runing. My wife was driving it.Going do the interstate running 70 and she said it just quit like if you turn the key off.So for some reason i took the cap off and the rotor buttom wasnt moving when rolling motor over.So had it towed home. The next day started to take it apart. This is what I found.Harmanice balancer was broken at the keyway. The timing chain was snaped and there is at lease on bent valve. And that was as far as i went.So talking about bad luck I think i have it.LOL But what would break the Harmonice Balancer?I have never seen one brake like it.It was about a 1 inch square that broke out.Any Ideas. The motor was running great before this happen.Didnt smoke or rattle or use any oil.

I would guess the harmonic balancer broke as a result of the engine locking up. The engine suddenly stopped turning, but the harmonic balancer and all the belt driven accessories didn't.

I do not understand the bent valve, unless the keeper came off and it dropped into the engine.

I am guessing the problem may have started by a loose timing chain. The chain may have been so loose it got caught and locked the engine up.
