New guy here so this ? may have already been answered. I searched for a while but could not find the answer. Here's the ?:
I have a "00 Lariat. When the hubs are unlocked they make a horrific noise (grinding) yet when I place the hubs in lock it goes away. Now, I belive the hubs are shot but before I go spending $$ for hubs I wanted to get some second opnions. I am a mechanic but I dont normally work on automobiles (aircraft) so I would like to spend as little to correct the problem but if the hubs need to be replaced then so be it.
From what it sounds like, it's not your hubs, it's the bearings. They use a unitized setup ARE NOT serviceable, they have to be replaced. You can find them aftermarket for around $230 - 260 a side, or OEM at around $400 per side.
On a 2000 truck, it's not surprising. Might want to check the ball joints while you're at it. They are probably not too far behind if they haven't been replaced before.

might not be the case..................i had a similar problem while i was driving a friends SD when he was in Iraq. same thing was happening, grinding noise every so often, i'd lock them in.........no noise. bearings were fine. i drove them that way for like a week, then i found anouther set on e-bay, put them in, and no more problems. when he got back it took about 3 trips to the mud holes, and they were doing the same thing, he replaced them w/ WARN premiums and never had an issue again!
If he's grinding when not locked that means its the small needle bearings that support the axle shaft passing through the wheel bearing unit(unservicable ) as Brf250sd said.
its possible its the hubs but my $ are on the little needles
Don't let it go very long or you will be replacing the axle shaft$$$$$$$$$$
The only way that the hubs themselves would be grinding is if they are stripped (very rare unless it's seriously abused). But then they would be grinding when locked, not when unlocked.
Forty is pointing you in the right direction with the unit bearings. And liek he said, too long and its gonna grind down the axle shaft and then you have another expense.
Jack the front of the truck up and pull on the tire top to bottom and also side to side. If there is play in both directions, the unit bearings are toast..
