Backfire
Hello everyone,
I have a 66 F-100 with a 352. Everything is stock. On decel she backfires, I have replaced the wires, plugs, points, etc.. and it worked fine for about a month and now its starting again. Can anyone suggest what I should check or replace. Thanks in advance for your help.

E I'd say your timing is off and there and is too much gas unburned. Did you adjust the carb?

Maybe your points are wearing?
I had this problem with the same setup and I can't recall what I finally determined the problem was, but make sure you fix it cause you can blow mufflers apart. Ask me how I know :-)

Thanks for the replies. The carb is adjusted and supposedly the timing is set correctly at 8deg. I have my doubts on the points becuase somenone mentioned to me that they have a tendency to unadjust after a short time. Does anyone know the gap setting for the points? thanks..

.018 or the thickness of most bussness cards. Yes pionts due close up from the wearing of the plastic finger that rides on the diributor cam to open them. Most points have a felt wiper and come with a capsill of point grease to put on the felt. this keep the wear low.
Fords are some what fammos for having to much voltage at the points as well this makes them wear out fast. If you look at the arm on the pionts and its discolored check your voltage regulator and balest resitor.

Ok here is my plug for the day. Why not put a Crane XR-700 in? Get rid of the points. It uses an infared beam that shoots through a slotted rotor. It's a lot more acurate then points. Just my two cents.

Thanks a million for the replies. I will check the points and voltage. Is the crane XR-700 an electronic ignition replacement? Will it make a big difference in performance and eliminate the backfire and hesitation? What is the approximate cost on one of those? thanks.
