Header Gasket recomendation??

I have a set of Hedman 89100 headers for my 390. I was wondering what brand of gaskets everyone is using. I bought a set of Summit copper gaskets but the bolt holes are too small. Any help will be appreciated!!!!

yep...you're right. I've never used anything other than the gaskets that come with the headers. I don't know the material composition. They look like a thick paper gasket but obviously they're high temp...LOL. I've never really had much of a problem. I've heard the copper ones are better. I'd think you could drill out the copper ones you have if all that's wrong is the bolt holes are a bit too small.

Good Luck!

The ones that came with the Hedman headers are crap! Already been that route. My dad has the copper ones on his truck, and he had to cut them on top and bottom. Didn't know that when i bought em. THEY LEAK BAD!! I talked to a guy today that said use the Hooker Header gaskets. The only problem i see with them is the port holes are to small. I think I can use a dremel tool to cut them out bigger to fit the header ports.

I use TWO felpro gaskets against each cylinder head. I cut the port opening to fit using a chisel. Keep snugging up the bolts (engine cold) for the first few hundred miles. I put anti-sieze on the bolts at first, they did not come loose. Now I don't use anything on the bolt threads. The only leaks I have are because they are cheap dyno max headers with slip joints on the passenger side.

Thanks FEmtnmax. I got the set of hooker header gaskets, because a local ford mechanic says he uses them all the time without any problem. I had to cut alot out of them, but the dremel tool worked a little better then the chisel did in my case. I used the cut off wheel and then a grinding stone to get the ports matched. Took a little while, but they looked like factory made when I was done. I hope they work like he said they do.

the fel-pro I use don't work well on my blackjacks. the distance between the port to bolt holes seem low, so I have to notch the tops a little so there's a sliver still catching the top of the ports.

mr.gasket is the only other brand up here but they don't come with the lower holes.

btw, is it the 428cj that uses the side holes? I'd sure like to avoid using the lower holes if I decide to use my 390 in my 68 stang.

The performance shop I bought my hooker gaskets from said that the gaskets that have the holes in the side for the GT heads(14 bolt holes) will burn through if you don't have the holes pluged. This makes since if you think about it. It only has about a 1/4 inch of material between the bolt hole and the port hole. Just something to think about! The hooker's seem to be good gaskets other then having to modify them to fit the header ports, but you probably would have to on almost all gaskets. JMO

Here is the gaskets I got for my motor.
