Flashing battery light

Quick question

Guessing I have a "going bad" alternator
symptium - The battery light on the dash s intermittently flashing at varoius brightness and frequency.
the truck is a 1989 F250 with a 7.3 diesel

can anyone help point me in the right direction to confirm and suggest a replacement as I would like to increase the output and go to an internal regulator.

Thanks
Ken

It sounds like the brushes may be worn. If it does it on a regular basis, you can take it to autozone and let them put it on their tester.

I do not have any direct experience with retro-fitting your engine with a larger alternator. I though since it was a diesel, you already had a large alternator?

Took it to a place that actually does rebuilding of alternators, starters,....

With me present they took both the alternator and regulator off and put it on a test setup. Found that the diode pack has a bad diode, and the brushes are "lucky to be working". I watched then take it apart and there was also a lot of play n the bearings maybe 1/8 inch on the front and 1/16 on the back. The alternator is a 70 Amp.

The tech suggested that either it be rebuilt for $110 or a new 130 amp for $155 so I am going to go for the 130 amp. The 130 amp also has a (1 wire) regulator attached.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram of the alternator and external regulator so I can figure out how to adapt it. The truck is a 1989 F250 7.3 diesel

Thanks
Ken

Well, if the new alternator is a one-wire type, then you only have to hook the one wire to the battery + correct? You probably should run a new larger wire from the new alt to the bat + since it has more output. If you have a factory ammeter in the dash, it probably will not work anymore. You can install a aftermarket voltmeter under the dash to monitor the system to make sure it works.
