Rebuild help

Just rebuilt the motor in my 93 Bronco 351w/efi. I put the 35-255-5 comp cam and Edlebrocks 60329 heads with adjustable roller rockers. I fired it up today and she didn't run right. Had a hard time getting it up to 2000 rpms to break in the cam and the headers started glowing at the collectors. I checked to make sure the timing was set, rotor points to number 1 at TDC and reads 0 deg on the balancer. Only thing I can think of is that the lifters aren't set right. When I set the lash I followed what the instructions said with the cam. Any ideas?

My old man just had this question about setting the lifters. Is there a specifc order I have to go buy to adjust these rockers/lifters. On a Chevy number 1 goes to TDC, then adjust the intakes and exhuast on certain cylinders ( we can't remember which ones), then you bring 6 to TDC and adjust the remaining cylinders. Does Ford have a sequence like this or do I just follow the cam instructions?

Thanks in advance

Is the cam speed density friendly? If not, have you done a mass air conversion? Cam swaps with speed density are a bit more tricky unless the grind on the cam is specifically speed density friendly.

As for the lifter/rocker adjustment, thats untrodden pathways for me personally so I can't be of mush assistance. Frankly didn't realize that hydraulic lifters needed adjustment... never done it to any of mine. But someone here can shed more light on this topic than I. Of that I am certain.

The cam is set to run with this computer. I'm not the first one on here to run it that's why I went with it.

the glowing headers would dictate a possible lean condition. check for vacum leaks and also check your firing order on the dizzy, its easy to get 7 & 8 mixed. also check fuel pressure at the rail as well. not sure about the valve adjusting.

The lash has to be set when there is no tension on the valve or the lifter. If there is tension then you'll end up having most of your valves set way too loose. The order is:

With #1 at TDC just after the intake closes (Power Stroke about to start)
Check / adjust
No. 1 intake No. 1 exhaust
No. 7 intake No. 5 exhaust
No. 8 intake No. 4 exhaust

Rotate engine 180 degrees in the direction of engine travel.
Check / Adjust
No. 5 intake No. 2 exhuast
No. 4 intake No. 6 exhaust

Rotate engine another 180 degress to the 270 degree position from starting
Check / adjust
No. 2 intake No. 7 exhaust
No. 3 intake No. 3 exhaust
No. 6 intake No. 8 exhaust

That should do it. Good luck.

Ok, just checkin'. We've seen folks swap axles without a VSS into a truck that requires one to run properly and ask what the problem is AFTER the swap is completed. It was that kind of concern that I had.

I finally got it running. Ended up being the liftters, had em' too tight. I think it was causing extra fuel to be dumped which was buring up in the exhaust. I still have one that's a little off, plug 8 looks rich but I'm gonna give it a few dyas and see what it does.
