Now I have heard everything.. I know when you work for a big company you become just a number, but can't they even tell you face to face that they are letting you go?
Radio Shack notified employees electronically their jobs were gone.
I was laid off once when my company was acquired by another and they let those that were making the most money go. They contacted me later and admitted that sales were down and asked me to come back. I politely refused (never burn your bridges) and went to a company that wanted me to make money.
If I was laid off by email, I would find the HR manager and whoop his azz. What is he gonna do than, actually tell me I am fired? That is the sorriest chit I have heard all week.

Shares of RadioShack rose 10 cents, to $18.02 in trading Wednesday morning on the
New York Stock Exchange
Guess Wall Street approved of the method, but guess that is about par for those jerks anyway. All they care about is the possibility of making a dime off the deal.
Gutless management is nothing new. One nameless company I used to work for would send security to your desk, inform you, stand there as you gathered your personal belongings, take your ID card, and un-ceremoniously escort you from the building.
Come to think of it, it may have prevented a few noses getting punched out.

It actually closed up 29 cents for the day.
Yes, Unfortunately Wall street likes when companies layoff. It looks at it as them cutting expenses. Ford Has been going up on the news of Layoffs also.
The few times I got layed off I was told buy a supervisor, but I would be more apt to bust up the place if they did it electronically.. Even having security there is still not as bad as what RS did..
When our company got bought out we were told to lock up our lockers and go home. We would be notified by letter if we were to be offered to be rehired by the new company, if we weren't going to be offered a job we would get a notice through DHL informing us of it. If we weren't offered a job they would clean out our lockers and take what they determined to be our personal stuff to another building where we could pick it up. Just to make it interesting some got notices both ways so they didn't know what to think. The 800 # was so busy that some couldn't get through.

If it's good for the shareholder, it's going to s..k for the employees...
That's a poor way of informing someone that they aren't needed anymore but what do you expect?
Firing someone can be a problem if that person tends to get violent. I have seen guys go nuts over the years when they got fired. A friend of mine fired a guy that worked for him only to be hit in the head with a 2x4 after he did it.
We have allowed electronics to take over our everyday lives. I can't begin to count the number of parents with cell phones stuck in their ears when I pick my son up from school, in a truck that can more or less diagnose it's own problems.
I guess what I mean to say is that I look for more of this to happen in the future as the same thing happened to three workers in the company that my girlfriend works for. They were RNs and were informed by a memo to them over the computers they use in their work.
It's a sorry way to do it but in some ways....is safer for the manager person that does the firing.
> Sales of cellular phones, a key item for RadioShack, have been disappointing.
Because their store sales staff stink. I bought two phones from Radio Shack, but, after the very poor service, over returning a defective made security system (49-1000), I decided never to go to them for anything again, including batteries. Good riddance, they do not deserve to survive in the market place, imo.
It use to be staffed with people that knew at least what a diode was.

NO DOUBT!
Remember when you could go to Radio Shack and actually buy all the parts needed to BUILD your own radio? They should have changed the name to Cell Phone Shack about 6 years back because that's pretty much all they're about any more. They have a few oddball components buried in the back and all the rest is cell phones, cell phone accessories, batteries and RC cars. I love how you can't even check out without playing 20 questions about your current cell phone, service, if you want a second line, if you need a third line, etc. I don't shop there anymore.
I worked for RS about 7 years ago (can't beleive its been that long!) and it has done a 180 from the way it was when I worked there. Everything that attracted people to RS is gone or almost gone. All those components, cables and connectors AND having people in the store that at least had some clue about it was what brought people in the door. It wasn't big ticket stuff, but it made a TON of profit for the store and the company. Now they've gone to this Circuit City lite format where they try to sell everything under the sun and don't do any of it well. They had a niche market that they excelled at and then turned away from it completely.
RS isn't competitive in cell phones anymore simply because there are too many places to get them now. When I worked for RS, some of the stores were the only place to get a cell phone from certain providers in town. Then those providers built their own stores down the street, offered more phones and accessories than what RS did and ran RS out of the cell phone business.
The few times I've walked in there recently to buy some components on a whim I've gotten nothing but deer in headlights looks anytime I ask if they have a particular kind of resistor, capacitor, IC ("we can order that for your sir!"), etc., in stock. Really, really sad. It USED to be one of my favorite places to go into when I was a kid.
